Science Journalists Should Not Be in a Hurry to Publish Science News

In a panel discussion on the theme of “Science Communication in Islamic Countries: Towards an Effective Network” which was held on Sunday, November 10th at IRIB University, William Odinga Balikuddembe, President and CEO of Uganda Science Journalists Association (USJA), talked about some principles of publishing science news.

MSTF media reports:

“Publishing news based on evidence is the key that makes science journalists different from other [journalists],” he said.

He elaborated on this point at length, contending that “it might be easy for other journalists to get excited and publish news as soon as possible, but a science journalist should not share the news until having some strong pieces of evidence.”

According to Odinga Balikuddembe, “science journalists should not hurry to publish news, just as scientists should not hurry to publish the result of their research.”

The 6th round of Science and Technology Exchange Program (STEP) in Islamic Countries was held simultaneously with 2019 Mustafa Prize Award Ceremony in Iran. Science Communication was one of the main focuses of attention in this round of STEP.
