Submission deadline for 4th Noor competition extended

The deadline for submitting works to the 4th round of Noor school student competition, in recognition of Prof. Omar Yaghi, was extended to 21 August 2020.

MSTF Media reports:

Due to school closures and disbandment of student teams caused by COVID-19 outbreak, the deadline for submitting works to the 4th round of Noor school student competition (henceforth Noor competition) was extended to 21 August 2020 in order to provide avid students with ample opportunity to present their works to the competition.

Due to Coronavirus pandemic and the students’ absence from schools, special conditions were adopted for this round of Noor competition along with the deadline extension by the end of August 2020. In order to follow medical advice and healthcare guidelines proposed by the WHO and I. R. I. Ministry of Health and Medical Education which include social distancing and dispersal of gatherings, familial registration (the enrolment of the students and their families) will be permissible from 21 May 2020. Any student, as the head of the team, can participate in the competition from home along with his family members.

Among the features of this round we can refer to the display of various scientific ideas apropos of the competition subjects under the Scientific Guide section of Noor competition webpage. These ideas are continuously introduced to the participating students daily and are considered to be feasible at home.

Participants must form a two- or three-member team and submit their works to the competition secretariat in form of a ONE MINUTE (60 seconds) movie clip. In so doing, they must visit the MSTF website at www.mstfdn.org, Noor competition section, by the end of August 2020.

Noor competition is held annually as one of the events organized by the Mustafa Science and Technology Foundation (MSTF). It aims to have a role in motivating the young generation of the Islamic world, broadening technological and scientific horizons, and helping encourage the growth of prodigious talents.

The 4th round of Noor competition, in recognition of Prof. Omar Yaghi who was the 2015 Mustafa Prize laureate, began in August last year. The subject of this round encompasses various areas of material and energy where students should compete in producing 60-second scientific video clips on their experiments.

Noor competition is held annually and named after one of the eminent scholars of the world. The first round of this event was held in 2015 commemorating Ibn al-Haytham, the renowned and prominent scholar of the Islamic world, on the occasion of the 1000th anniversary of his authoring ‘The Book of Optics’. More than 4000 school students nationwide took part in the 1st round of the competition and 1650 video clips were submitted in different areas of science and applications of light where 200 works were honored ultimately.

The 2nd round was held in 2016, in recognition of Prof. Jackie Ying who was also the 2015 Mustafa Prize laureate. This round included different areas of science such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Astronomy, and/or a combination of sciences, wherein more than 5000 school students participated and 2000 one-minute movie clips on scientific experiments were submitted to the competition secretariat, from which 100 student teams were selected and praised

The 3rd round of Noor competition, in commemoration of Ibn al-Razaz al-Jazari, was held on robotics. Al-Jazari was one of the most influential scientists in robotics and, undoubtedly, the founder of mechanical engineering in the world. The subject of this round was dynamic mechanisms and other experiments in various topics of mechanics. 5122 school students in form of 2183 teams registered in the 3rd round of Noor competition and 1733 movie clips were sent to the secretariat. Finally, on the closing day, 100 teams were selected and honored.
