Young scientists shared their achievements with the public in Science Cafés

Five finalists of the KANS Scientific Competition shared their latest research and achievements with the public at five different Science Cafés.

The Associate Professor Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) Woei Jye Lau elaborated on his research on the “Next Generation Membranes for Water Desalination” during Mustafa prize science café.

He pointed to the thin-film composite (TFC) membrane as a breakthrough discovery in the 1970s, prepared using the interfacial polymerization (IP) technique.

He said that TFC is considered significant progress in composite membrane development and emerged as one of the most advanced technologies in water and wastewater purification processes.

Then he talked about the most promising technology to desalinate seawater: reverse osmosis (RO), which is driven by a pressure gradient across a semi-permeable membrane.

Pike See Cheah, the Associate Professor of Universiti Putra Malaysia, discussed the Novel insight to improve learning and memory during Mustafa Prize Science Café.

She began his talk with a brief explanation about the brain and its different parts. Then she talked about Ruxolitinib as the first janus kinase 1 (JAK1) and JAK2 inhibitor approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agency for the treatment of myeloproliferative neoplasms. The drug targets the JAK/STAT signaling pathway, which is critical in regulating the gliogenesis process during nervous system development. She said that it is suggested to use the potential use of ruxolitinib to revert pathological conditions caused by gliogenic-shift in early brain development, such as Down and Noonan syndromes.

The Assistant Engineer, Engineering Department of Bangladesh Ripon Hore, was another young scientist who shared his achievements on behavior of wrap-faced embankment on soft soil with audience at Mustafa Prize Science Café.

Furthermore, at these science Cafés, Mohammad Ali Khayamian, Post-Doc student at Tehran University, discussed his research on cytokine storm in the COVID-19 patients and Mehdi Maleki, member of the board at university Iran University of Science and Technology, elaborated on his research on a group of Composites in managing renewable energies.

Science Café is one of the promotional events held by the Mustafa Science and Technology Foundation, promoting science and technology in the Islamic world. This event hosts experts from various fields of science, providing an informal environment for the public’s engagement with science by asking questions and sharing ideas with the guest speakers of the program and with each other.
