The professor of Universiti Teknologi Petronas in Malaysia emphasized that The “Mustafa(pbuh) Prize” is the top award given by a Muslim country. It has one of the highest in terms of the monetary reward in the world.

MSTF Media reports:

Kamaruzzaman Sopian, the professor of  Universiti Teknologi Petronas stressed that the development of science and technology in the Muslin countries can be evaluated in terms of certain key performance parameters. It includes the percentage of GDP spent on R&D, the scientist, engineer, and technician innovation index, and publications in scientific journals.

“In terms of percentage of GDP spent on R&D, OIC countries spend on average 0.50 percent of their GNP on R&D, compared to 2.30 percent for OECD countries. Egypt, which leads the Muslim countries, spends 0.86 percent of its GNP on R&D as compared to 2.27 percent in another country. Indonesia spends 0.17 percent as compared to 1.78 percent in Taiwan. The annual growth of R&D expenditure in a few Muslim countries, especially Turkey and Malaysia, is very encouraging.” He said about the position of West Asia and the Middle East countries in the field of science and technology in recent years.

“Muslims are also far behind in terms of R&D manpower. OIC countries have 8.5 scientists, engineers, and technicians per 1,000 population as compared to 40.7 for the world average and 139.3 for OECD countries.” He continued.

“In terms of science and technology innovation, three Muslim-majority countries are in the top 50 of the Innovation Index in the world. These Muslim countries are the UAE, Malaysia, and Turkey. Other 20 Muslim majority countries, such as Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Morocco, are in the top 100 countries in the Innovation Index.” The professor of Universiti Teknologi Petronas said.

“In terms of scientific publications, Muslim-majority systems only published 5.15% of all Web of Science (WoS) papers globally in the last three decades, although their combined population represents 14.16% of the world population. Most selected Muslim-majority science systems started demonstrating research intensity (total publications divided by population) levels higher than the world average.” Sopian said.

“However, in terms of growth in these key parameters, many Muslim-majority countries show encouraging growth.” He emphasized.

“As far as I know, there are several international awards given by Muslim countries. The King Faisal Prize is given annually in areas of service to Islam, Islamic studies, Arabic language and literature, science, and medical.” He said about the status of Muslims countries science and technology awards from in world.

“The Turkey International TÜBA Academy Prizes are awarded to scientists in the categories of sciences namely, Basic and Engineering sciences, Health and Life sciences and) Social Sciences and Humanities.” He stressed.

“The Malaysia Mahathir Science Award (MSA) is awarded for contribution in tropical sciences in recognition of contributions and innovations towards solving problems in the tropics through science and technology. The categories for the award are Tropical Agriculture, Tropical Architecture and Engineering, Tropical Medicine, and Tropical Natural Resources. “ The professor of Universiti Teknologi Petronas said.

“The “Mustafa(pbuh) Prize” is a science and technology award, granted to top researchers and scientists.  The award is given as one of the emblems of scientific achievement in honor of great researchers and global pioneers in the advancement of science and technology.” he said.

“The Mustafa(pbuh) Prize, a prestigious science and technology award, is given every two years to the top academics and researchers in the Islamic world in four categories: basic and applied engineering, Nano science and nanotechnology, information and communication science and technology, and life and medical science and technology.” he continued.

“I would like to suggest that another category be created in the field of social science and humanities. The award should be globally acknowledged and conferred upon distinguished scholars and experts in the field of studying human society's institutions and operations, as well as the interpersonal dynamics among individuals within society (such as politics, economics, and philosophy). This recognition is reserved for individuals whose pioneering research significantly contributes to addressing the most pressing global issues.” Sopian said.

“Japan, South Korea, the United States, Germany, China, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Finland are the top 10 nations in terms of commercializing research and technology.” he said about the most powerful countries in the field of commercialization of science.

“Muslim nations can reach this position by strengthening (a) their R&D efforts, as those nations are more likely to produce cutting-edge technology that can help their economies and the entire globe, (b) The quantity of patent applications made – nations with a high number of patent applications are more likely to develop cutting-edge technologies that can have a big impact on their economies and the rest of the world, (c) the number of tech startups - Tech companies frequently provide ground-breaking technologies that upend established markets and industries and spur economic expansion. (d) High-speed internet accessibility - nations with quick, dependable internet connections are more likely to draw tech firms and startups and support the creation of new technologies, (e) digital competitiveness, which includes digital talent, digital regulation, data governance, digital attitudes, and the availability of capital; (f) overall technological infrastructure, which includes the availability of research and development facilities, the calibre of educational institutions, and the presence of a skilled workforce.” He said.

Sopian believes that The “Mustafa(pbuh) Prize” is the top award given by a Muslim country. It has one of the highest in terms of the monetary reward in the world.
