Nature-Based Solution to Strengthen Sustainable Public Open Space

The member of National Research and Innovation Centre Agency, Ignasius D A Sutapa said that Increasing vegetated land cover, replacing pavement hardeners, introducing bio pores, constructing water ponds and wetlands, increasing public participation, and adjusting appropriate government policy and regulations are several possible actions that would be suggested for improvement.

MSTF Media reports:

Addressing the 9th Science and Technology Exchange Program (STEP) on Saturday, the 30th of September 2023, Ignas Sutapa said that Jakarta City, one of the largest cities in Indonesia, is experiencing urban area development generally intensive and unsustainable and has impacts directly or indirectly on landscape degradation. Kalijodo public open space (POS) is constructed to facilitate different social functions and ecosystem services in the Jakarta Capital Special Region.

“This study aims to describe the non-ideal condition of the Kalijodo area as a POS and to strengthen its functions towards a Public Green Open Space (PGOS). The ecohydrology – Nature-based Solution principles were taken into consideration for understanding, assessment, and identification of possible efforts to achieve the PGOS level.” Sutapa stressed.

“Increasing vegetated land cover, replacing pavement hardeners, introducing bio pores, constructing water ponds and wetlands, increasing public participation, and adjusting appropriate government policy and regulations are several possible actions that would be suggested for improvement.” the member of National Research and Innovation Centre Agency added.

“Positive impacts consist of average air temperature reduction, increasing water absorption ability, and potential economic gain, entering THI to the comfort zone and positive people’s perception, as well as increasing people attendance will have potentially resulted.” He said.
