Young scientists follow persistence and resilience

Professor of American University of Beirut said that My advice for young scientists is summarized in 2 words: persistence and resilience. One of the definitions of persistence is “the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult” and The definition of resilience is “the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties

Addressing the 5th Mustafa (pbuh) Prize Award Cremony, Samia Khoury said that it is a great honor for me to be one of the laureates for the Mustafa prize, especially as the 2nd woman recipient of the prize and the first woman to receive it in the field of Life and Medical Science and Technology.
"I was born in Lebanon, and from an early age I knew I wanted to be a doctor. The brain became an object of fascination as I read and learned more and more about its function. After graduating from medical school, I moved to the US to train in neurology, then I spent then next 25 years at Harvard and the Brigham and women’s hospital where I started my research on multiple sclerosis." she said.
"My mentor at Harvard, Dr. Howard Weiner was a great support in my career and helped me achieve my goals, as I became full Professor with an endowed chair." American University of Beirut stressed
"In 2011, I was recruited to the American university of Beirut to head the Abu Haidar Neuroscience institute and to start a multiple sclerosis center of excellence. Our center has grown tremendously and we have now more than 4000 patients registered." she emphasized.
"Our strength is the multidisciplinary approach to treatment and combining clinical care and research. More than 1500 patients participate in our longitudinal cohort study and we have been able to continue our scientific research in spite of the difficult conditions our country is facing." she said.

"So I tell my mentees set up your goals and be persistent, you will face difficulties and setbacks but to be successful you must have resilience. " she added.
"Achievement and success require support, and I was lucky to have the support of my family. I wish may parents were alive to watch this event. I could not have achieved my goals without the support of my husband Dr. Mohamed Sayegh a previous Mustafa prize laureate and our 2 children Layal and Malek." she said.
