Sami Erol Gelenbe, a laureate of 2017 Mustafa(pbuh) Prize, recently received the Medal of Commander of the Order of the Crown of Belgium awarded by H.M. King Philippe of Belgium.

MSTF Media reports:

Erol Gelenbe received the Honour of Commander of the Order of the Crown on Jan 23rd 2024 in Paris at the Delegation Wallonie-Bruxelles.

According to the Institute of Theoretical and Applied Informatics, Polish Academy of Sciences, “The honour was awarded by H. M. the King of Belgium upon the request of the Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique (FNRS), for Gelenbe's exceptional contributions to research in Belgium during his six years as Professor at the University of Liege (1973-1979), where he developed  Diffusion Approximations for Queueing Systems, and other original research methods, which are still in use today at IITIS and other research institutes.”

During a speech, professor Veronique Halloin, the Secretary General of the FNRS and President of the European Science Foundation, presented Gelenbe's contributions to Belgium in detail, including the reports and events he prepared for the Royal Academy of Belgium where he has been a Fellow since 2015 and bestowed the medal to him.

Among the attendees were Dr. Yves Bamberger, Honorary Vice-president of the French National Academy of Technologies (FNAT), Mr. Christian Vigouroux former president of the Institute Pasteur, Dr. Bruno Jarry Honorary President of the FNAT, and Mr. Paul Dewilghen, General Delegate of Wallonia-Brussels in Paris.

The Order was established by King Leopold II and initially intended to recognize heroic deeds and distinguished service achieved for service in the Congo Free State. Currently, the Order is awarded (by Royal Decree) for meritorious service in public employment and for distinguished artistic, literary or scientific achievements, as well as for commercial or industrial services in Belgium or Africa.

Gelenbe was awarded the 2017 Mustafa(pbuh) Prize in Information and Communication Sciences and Technology for his pioneering research on “Modeling and Performance Evaluation of Computer Systems.” Nominations are now open for the 2025 Mustafa(pbuh) prize. The deadline for nominations is August 31, 2024.
