Introducing Science Enthusiasts to Science Journalism at the Second Sci-Feast

On November 10th, the second Sci-Feast was held to commemorate World Science Day for Peace and Development at the Iran International Innovation District. This event featured various activities for students and sci-questers, including visits to knowledge-based companies located in Pardis Technology Park, 23rd and 24th Mustafa (PBUH) Prize Science Cafés, sky observations, participation in scientific experiments, and a science journalism workshop.
MSTF Media reports:
Participants in the science journalism workshop, held in collaboration with the Mustafa (PBUH) Science and Technology Foundation and the Nano and Micro Technology Development Headquarters, were introduced to some of the fundamental principles and skills required for producing science and technology contents.
The workshop began with a precise definition of news and news writing. The instructor, using exemplary cases from reputable news outlets, demonstrated how to analyze news articles and understand their underlying structures. This segment of the workshop also included tips on enhancing content impact to attract a wider audience.
Subsequently, participants analyzed news samples, identifying and categorizing their formatting styles, providing an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning.
A significant portion of the workshop was dedicated to differentiating between news reporting and scientific reporting. The provided samples assisted participants in gaining a deeper comprehension of the requirements and structure of scientific reporting, enabling them to craft compelling and impactful narratives.
"Connecting to science" and conveying complex scientific concepts, including the achievements of Mustafa (PBUH) Prize laureates, in a simplified manner to the public is the primary focus of the events organized by the Mustafa (PBUH) Science and Technology Foundation's "Observatory". Consequently, Observatory events such as Science Café, Sci-Quest, Sci-Feast, and the Noor Student Competition incorporate training in science communication, with a particular emphasis on science journalism.
